Ashes to Ashes

Ashes to Ashes

The game is beginning to get supplements. Chaosium have launched the dark fantasy setting Ashes to Ashes as a monograph PDF with a print edition to follow soon:

This Basic Roleplaying setting casts the adventurers as mavericks in a fantasy world that is losing a war it does not even know that it is fighting. Hidden demons and their mortal minions—many of whom do not even know who their masters truly are—manipulate events from the shadows, experimenting with social control mechanisms to steer the human cattle in the direction that they want them to go. The adventurers’ goal is to discover and stop them.

Also just released, or technically re-released, is Berlin ‘61. Again this is currently available as a monograph PDf and will be in print form shortly. This a BRP reworking of the product originally released via the MRQ STL / OGL.

A setting for different Basic Roleplaying genres. Includes information on life in the city during the cold war, key locations, and special organizations. Battle spies, assassins, cultists and the Dark Herald Kototh. A great back-drop for espionage adventures in the 1960s style, and silver age superhero action!

More information can be found at Chaosium’s catalogue page

Plus of course there’s a whole slew of supplements in various stages of development but with as yet no firm publication date, as well as the recent wave of Call of Cthulhu specific monographs. And Chaosium have a number of other irons in the fire – the BRP Adventure contest is still open (move quickly though, closing date is next Thursday!) and Jason Durall has recently turned in the manuscript for the Basic Roleplaying Quick Start (see his blog post for July 1st), plus there are a number of projects no yet formally announced. The ones I definitely know of are mine: I’ve got a scenario with Chaosium awaiting art and layout, and a couple of very short pieces as well. It seems reasonable therefore that there will be others…

The core BRP rule book is at the printers, on schedule for a late June release, but Chaosium have announced that copies can be purchased now in PDF format – see here!

And the new BRP isn’t the only PDF available – see here – and they have indicate that more PDF titles are likely to follow.

Basic Roleplaying - The Chaosium d100 System

Chaosium has announced that Basic Roleplaying is about to be sent to the printers for a May 2008 release. Basic Roleplaying now has a new cover by Paul Carrick and I must say it looks pretty good.

I’ve been meaning to post about this for some time. Many of you are probably already away of this information but I’m going to post about it anyway. In any event Chaosium is in the process of finalizing the 1st Edition of the Basic Roleplaying book. Basic Roleplaying is a complete rules system integrating 30 years of game play and refinement to allow play in any genre, from fantasy to sci-fi, from modern horror to supers and everything in between. From what Chaosium says the final book will released sometime around June 2008 and run somewhere in the range of 390 pages.

Gary Gygax at GenCon 2007

Gary Gygax at GenCon 2007

Gary Gygax, the co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons along with Dave Arneson, has passed away on March 4th 2008. Gary has recently been working with Troll Lord Games, a small paper and pencil RPG publisher. Troll Lords forums have up a post noting that he has passed away. That Associated Press has confirmed that the 69 year old game designer has indeed passed away.

Whether you love or hate D&D it must be duly acknowledged that Gary Gygax was the was, along with Dave Arneson, known as the Father of Roleplaying. He co-founded Tactical Studies Rules (now part of Wizards of the Coast) in 1974 with Don Kaye. Gygax was the son of Swiss immigrant Martin Gygax and an American mother. His gaming experiences began at the age of five and six with playing pinochle and chess as well as the usual pretend games of any child that could be likened to live action role-playing. He had been in poor health, suffering multiple strokes and a near-heart attack.

May the gods speed you on your next great adventure, Gary!

Basic Roleplaying

Chaosium’s Deluxe Basic Role Playing is still under development and seems to be progressing well. The chapter on powers is undergoing major revision at present and the writer, Jason Durall, has stated that the chapter should be released to testing very soon. The powers chapter is the only one that required major revision. The other chapters are undergoing minor revision and will be posted along with the powers chapter.

Basic Roleplaying

So I haven’t been able to actually to any testing of the rules – heck I haven’t even had the time to read through all of them. I really need to print them out and well it’s like 348 pages so even if I double up the number of page per sheet and print them double sided I’m still looking at a good 87 pages.

The formatting of the play test rules is, as expected, pretty plain. Which can make for some dense reading – ultimately I’m sure they will look good as Chaosium has historically been quite good with production quality.

Basic Roleplaying

I just started play testing Deluxe Basic Role-Playing which is to be published by Chaosium sometime this year in 2008. So far it looks very good and very flexible – able to work with a variety of genres and milieus. So far we have received perhaps half of the test and it comes in at a whopping 340+ pages. Of course once formatted for publication it will probably not be so voluminous – the font will be smaller I am sure and laid out in multiple column format.
